AEDG Mechanical Engineering students, Jode Fourie (Masters), Brian Jack (Honours) and Wian van Aswegen (Honours) were sponsored by Eastern Cape Branch of SAIMechE and eNtsa Research to attend the 2022 RAPDASA Conference in Somerset West, based on the outstanding work and outputs they have achieved in the last year as part of the AEDG group within the NMU.

All three have utilized cutting-edge engineering techniques & technologies to produce multiple functional outputs in collaboration with private sector entities across multiple disciplines and institutions, above and beyond their qualification’s curriculum demands.

As such, they were chosen to be part of an NMU delegation at this year’s Conference that participated not only in Conference Proceedings but also helped man the Rapid3D/EOS exhibit throughout the Conference.

This enabled them to not only showcase some of the work they have created but also to interact with the Conference delegates throughout the 4-day event…these delegates represented a cross-section of both leading international and national role-players in the Additive Manufacturing sector, all of whom reported back very favourably on the professionalism and knowledge that our students exhibited.

As a bonus, several new avenues of potential collaboration were also opened up for current and future projects and research both among delegates and exhibitors.

Attendances at Conferences of this nature are extremely important in exposing student engineers to not only cutting-edge contemporary technology that is applied in the engineering real-world, but also allows them to expand their engineering worldview and experience networking with experienced professionals in the business…all told, an invaluable experience that will have a significant impact on their careers going forward.
